The Importance of Setting Boundaries

Introduction:
God is a God of order and limits. In Genesis, He separated light from darkness and land from water. When we set boundaries for our children, we are mirroring God's character and loving them well.

Bible Verse:
"The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance." — Psalm 16:6

This verse shows that God's limits are not meant to harm us, but to bring us to "pleasant places" where we can enjoy our inheritance from Him. Just like a fence keeps a child safe inside a yard, God's boundaries keep us safe. Our boundaries keep our children safe.

Let’s Get Practical:

Set One Clear Rule with One Clear Consequence.

Don't overwhelm your child (or yourself) with too many rules. Choose one rule that is most important for safety or respect right now. Each week add another rule.

  • Example Rule: "You must hold my hand when we cross the street."
  • Example Consequence: "If you do not hold my hand, we will go right back inside and cannot go to the park."

Make it simple:

  1. State the rule clearly before you go out.
  2. If the rule is broken, follow through with the consequence immediately and calmly.
  3. Once the consequence is over, show love to your child and reassure them that the rule is to keep them safe because you love them.
